The Real Cost of Day Schooling in Nairobi vs. Boarding

The Real Cost of Day Schooling in Nairobi vs. Boarding

The sticker price isn't the real comparison. Once you add transport, time, and childcare, the maths often changes.

The Real Cost of Day Schooling in Nairobi vs. Boarding

Most parents compare boarding against day schooling by looking at two tuition numbers side by side, and boarding almost always looks more expensive that way. But tuition alone isn’t the real comparison for a Nairobi-based family. Once you add everything else a day school routine actually costs, the gap narrows, and sometimes reverses.

What a Nairobi day school routine typically costs, beyond tuition

Mid-tier Nairobi day schools commonly charge premium school-run transport of KSh 20,000–50,000+ per term on the busier routes. Add daily lunches (packed or purchased), before/after-school childcare or a house help specifically to manage the school run, and 2–3 hours a day of commuting time that both child and parent absorb, in traffic, at 4:30am wake-ups, in exhaustion that shows up in homework quality by evening.

What boarding at Acacia Ridge actually costs

Boarding tuition, meals, and supervised prep run KSh 48,000–52,000 a term, all-in: no separate transport bill, no daily lunch cost, no before/after-school care arrangement to manage. A termly managed shuttle (not a daily commute) covers the trip from Nairobi, Thika, Machakos, Kajiado, and Narok.

The comparison that actually matters

For what many Nairobi families already spend on the school run (premium transport, packed lunches, after-school care, and the time cost of a long commute) a child can board an hour away instead, with meals and supervised evening study included, and get the mornings back.

We won’t name specific competitor schools here, but as a category, comparable private boarding programmes in Kenya typically run KSh 250,000–400,000 a year, well above Acacia Ridge’s boarding fees.

The honest caveat

This comparison assumes a family that’s already paying for premium transport and childcare. If you’re close to a strong day school and don’t need either, day schooling can still be the better fit, which is exactly why we offer both, and why many of our current boarders started as day scholars before switching.
